One of the sweetest seasons in Ontario is fast approaching: Maple Syrup Season!
Maple syrup can be enjoyed all year around but the process of collecting sap from the sugar maple trees used to make it only happens once a year. So plan a trip to St. Jacobs to learn more and immerse yourself in the season.
TASTE! EXPERIENCE! LEARN! CELEBRATE!
You’ll travel by horse drawn trolley to a nearby woodlot on an Old Order Mennonite farm to see how sap is collected from majestic maple trees, then boiled down into maple syrup. Warm up by a wood stove in the sugar shanty and taste fresh maple syrup served over pancakes, and treat yourself to other fresh-made maple products like deliciously sweet maple sugar or taffy.
Tours typically depart from St. Jacobs Farmers' Market on Saturdays (from late February until April 11, 2020, and select days throughout March break).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to effects of the COVID-19 in Ontario please check for possible schedule changes or cancellations directly with St. Jacobs Horse Drawn Tours, and other businesses or attractions noted.
In nearby St. Jacobs, at the MAPLE SYRUP MUSEUM, see fine examples of items used by Indigenous people to collect and boil sap, step into a replica of an old-fashioned sugar shanty, and learn the history of maple syrup production in the area.
Finally, if you love to scout rural routes, look up the 2020 “MAPLE WEEKEND" FARM VISITS to find maple producers in the area (Waterloo-Wellington). Meet the people who make it and take some home to enjoy. Truly a tree to table experience! Maple Weekend takes place April 4 & 5, 2020. Learn more at mapleweekend.ca
